Format: CD

13. Down In It

Total: 71:47

Xref: None
Quality: VG Comments: This recording is 'ok'. It gets very distorted at times, and sound errors are frequent. Instead of leaving the concert 'as-is', they re-arranged it. At the end of each song, you can hear another song beginning to play as it fades out into a different song. It gets really annoying. There is a bad sound error on track five (Pinion/Mr. Self Destruct); between the two songs there is a loud static/random noise. Track two is actually Wish then The Downward Spiral, and Track 9 (Happiness In Slavery) is excellent until the distortion really kicks in and ruins it. Trent is in a bad mood on this one too. If you can find a taped copy, take that instead. From ANON.

Comments: Track 1 is from the soundtrack of the Crow Soundtrack. Tracks 2 and 6 are from Pretty Hate Machine (halo 2). Track 4 is from Broken (halo 5). Track 5 is from The Downward Spiral (halo 8). Track 7 is from March Of The Pigs (halo 7). Track 9 is from Head Like A Hole (halo 3). As the title suggest this bootleg is more "mellow". There is a great number of tracks with no words, also there are two new songs/remixes. The first one is a remix of A Warm Place called Naked. It is twice as long as the orginal with the last part when Eraser fadesin, stop and there is that humming and then more mellow keyboard riffs. The other is A Warm Fuck which is 12:00 minute remix of Eraser/A Warm Place that fades in and out of both songs. In the beginning there is Trent saying [hard to make out] "Taste you, find you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, smash me, break me, hate me, erase me" and then in the middle "smash me, smash me, smash me". Overall this is a VERY good import if you like Trent's mellow side. It can be compared to Rusty Nails ][ and Purest Feeling in terms of sound quality. From JARED.

Comments: The best concert quality recording from the "Now I'm Nothing" tour in 1990 I've heard so far. Track 4, "Justify" (Sanctified) has a unique instrumentation, so does That's What I Get, Suck, and especially Ringfinger. Justify (Sanctified) is played the same way it is on the Killer Instinct CD I've heard (same as Time To Suck), but not as distorted. That's What I Get is just quieter and the audience sings along to it on-key. The version of Suck is totally different from what's on the other boots. It is like the Suck on Demos & Remixes but with more background sounds and weird guitar effects added to it, also with louder drums. Ringfinger has guitars playing at the beginning instead of the normal "dig-dugs", and it starts with a voice saying "I want to hear your scream..." Also, the Intro in Track 1, "Intro / Terrible Lie", is NOT the rare song "Now I'm Nothing" but rather some odd monotonous instrumental before Terrible Lie. From PINION.

Nine Inch Nails: Monsters In Space

Format: CD
Catalog:
Produced: Hurricane Records
Date: September 17, 1995 (Hershey, PA)
Cover:
Front: The front cover of this bootleg features an image of Trent Reznor holding a microphone with both hands and looking towards the photographer. It appears to have been taken at an earlier show because this image has appeared in many bootlegs and other locations since it was taken. The creators of this bootleg have also added a distortion to this particular image. It appears as if the image is blurred outward in all directions from a central point on the photo itself. The blurring is more drastic towards the outside of the insert where it is impossible to make out any distinct shapes, only colors. I own the same photo that was used for the cover art and it has a reddish color in it as a result of the lighting at the concert. With this in mind, I think it is reasonalbe to assume that the graphic artists who created this front insert also added an artificial orange color to the image. In the lower portion of the image you can see the words "nine inch nails" written in a large Arial style font that has been severely blurred like the image of Trent. The color of the writing is a deep purple color and it appears rather fuzzy as a result of the blurring. Over top of this is printed the title of this bootleg, "monsters in space" in a simple bold face font in black without any distortion added to it. Because of the colored background from the image of Trent and the purlpe of the "nine inch nails" written in the background, the title shows through clearly.
Booklet: ?
Back: The back insert features the same image as the front, except it is distorted beyond recognition except for the basic outline of Trent's head and where his shoulder is. It looks as though the designer decided to blur the image starting from the upper right corner and down towards the lower left corner. Where Trent's head is you can faintly make out a faded "nine inch nails" in the background in a subtle shade of gray.
CD: The CD itself is plain black with the title "MONSTERS IN SPACE" written across the top of the bootleg in a tall and narrow font in the metallic color that most CDs have if they don't have a label added to them. On the left side of the CD spinner hole appears a logo which has three upper case D's surrounded by a thin box. On the other side of the CD spinner hole is the compact disc logo. The bottom portion of the disc has a warning against illegal reproduction. Below that appears an identicication number, "MIS-461". I assume the "MIS" refers to "Monsters In Space" and the "461 is some form of index number for the production company to use.

Comments: This appears to be a Mono recording. Recorded at Woodstock '94. Soundboard recording. Audience noise is overwhwelming at times. Some instruments, including the vocals cut out at times, so sometimes all you hear of an instrument is its echo from the field. Decent recording. Sometimes bass gets undefined. Electronic parts to the songs are remarkably clear most of the time. Decent boot. Get When The Whip Comes Down if at all possible instead. From ANON.

Comments: This is misdated as 11/4/94 Another recording from Flashback Worldproductions, and a damn fine recording too (not as good as Crossed Nails though). Lots of bass, but not an overdose-distorting amount, make this another must-have. Something was edited out between Head Like A Hole and Closer. The only bug/error on this recording is in Closer at the end of the last few verses, there is a loud 'THUMP' which you have to be prepared for. This is a very loud recording and it has one of the best live recordings of The Downward Spiral. From ANON.

Comments: Tracks 1-21: Recorded live at Nassau Coliseum, NY, Track 10: Instrumental version. Tracks 19-21: Done with Adam Ant and Marco Peroni, Tracks 22-23: Two remixes from Closer (halo 9). Audience noise is minimal and the recording is fairly decent. Trent does some improvisation between the songs, which includes his usual brand of swearing at the audience, and few tiny intros to songs (such as 'this is an old one' for Down In It), and at times even adds a 'thank you'. Trent does a tiny tribute to the original version of Suck by screaming 'suck suck suck!' twice at the end of it, once after the final 'how does it feel', and then again right at the end of the song. Trent also says a nice minute and a half introduction for Adam Ant, where he gives some background on the connection between Adam Ant and Nine Inch Nails. 'Physical', 'Red Scab', and 'Beat My Guest' are all sung by Adam Ant. Overall, I'd call it a RELATIVELY good CD. From RYAN and JOEL.

Trent also messes up the beginning verse of 'The Becoming' by singing the second verse first. Otherwise, the sound quality is pretty good. The song labelled 'Warszawa' is actually the instrumental part where Trent plays the saxaphone. David Bowie sings the lyrics 'she could have been a killer'. This track has been labelled as 'Intro To Scary Monsters' on other recordings. From ERIC.

Disc two has no errors, great sound, seems to be a copy of Woodstock '94 [Octopuss]. Even though this CD is not a first generation copy, the quality is great. If you don't own Purest Feeling and Demos And Remixes and you want a good woodstock CD, then get this well worth it. From GREGG. Painful Convictions is a great bootleg. It has a few of the NIN phantom songs and a good Woodstock cd. It is a pretty good soundboard recording with great quality. It dosent have any annoying pops, slurs, fade ins and outs, etc. I would recommend this cd to anyone who wants NIN phantom songs and a Woodstock cd. From ANON.

Comments: Recorded at "the right track studios"-cleveland, ohio. november 1988. These are the studio demos for Pretty Hate Machine (halo 2). They appear to have been mastered off of the original DAT tapes used for recording in the studio. This is a studio recording, with live vocals, and drums. Excellent quality, highly recommended. I'm pretty sure it's just a studio recording, like a trial run, of their concert from the time. It has the only known studio recordings of "Maybe Just Once", "Purest Feeling", and "Intro to Sanctified". It has a version of "Twist" on it, labeled as "Ringfinger" in the liner notes. The version of "Kinda I Want To" is the very 80's euro pop sounding version. The whole album has a very 80's electronic-pop sound to it. The vocals in the version of "The Only Time" on it make it sound like he really is drunk. Excellent quality, full stereo seperation. Very highly recommended to hear where Trent was coming from when he made Pretty Hate Machine. No audience noise, as there wasn't an audience. From ANON Another review, by individual Tracks: 1. A cool instrumental, with a Sanctified-like sound. 2. A little diffrent from the version on PHM . This one sounds creepier. The samples from Midnight Express are replaced with: "Get in there and give it a try, go ahead give it a try right now, doesn't that feel good? There, now you're ready get in there and get the job done. Life is good life is terrific, thank you God for another wonderful day!". Anyone know what this comes from? 3. I like this song a lot. It has a strong 80's synthpop feel to, which can be good when done right (Ministy's 'With Sympathy' did it dead wrong). 4. Like 3, this one has a strong synthpop sound to it, which I like. I wish they had released this version instead of that tribal crap. 5. In this one Trent actually sounds drunk. It sounds more 80's-ish than the released version, but is still very simular. 6. This is about the same as PHM, but a little more rough. 7. This song sounds pretty bad. Parts of it are sort of cool, though. And the lyrics are great ("she could be a savior, with everything she does, or some kind of punishment, for people just like us"). 8. Sounds a lot like PHM only with different lyrics. It also loses the Jane's Addiction sample. 9. This is a strange mix, less hip-hopish with more industrial, a real cool sample at the beginning (a scream). It still retains the original flavour of the original version. From KLINT

Nine Inch Nails: Purest Feeling II
Format: CD
Catalog: hawk066
Produced: Hawk Records
Date: 1988-1992
Cover:
Front: The front cover appears to be an attempted simulation of a blue cloth with a large 'nin' and a smaller 'purest feeling II' on it. Booklet: The booklet is a four pager, where the back cover is an exact reverse of the front cover. The center spread is essentially just the front cover again. Except larger and wider. Back: The back cover is similar to the front cover, and has a listing of the songs on it. This is the same that is on the tray. CD: The CD is similar to the Fixed CD in that it is all black and there is a large metallic blue 'n' on it. Underneath the 'n' is the writing 'purest feeling II'

Comments: This album is exactly the same as the Demos And Remixes one, except that the presentation is much weaker. The cover has a simple blue design, and the songs have terrible names. The only thing approaching a redeeming feature is that the sound quality is actually on par with (if not slightly better than) the quality of Demos And Remixes. If at all possible, get Demos And Remixes rather than this one. From F. Last update: Mar 15, 1997
